Empowering Upstanders: Bullying and Sexual Harassment Bystander Intervention
Bullying and sexual harassment are widespread and damaging issues in the lives of young people. While often overlooked, peers who witness these behaviors can play a critical role—either by contributing to the harm or by stepping in to stop it. This session will explore the complex dynamics of peer involvement, highlighting both the positive and negative roles bystanders can play, and the key factors that influence whether or not they intervene. Participants will be introduced to Norms and Bystander Intervention Training (NAB IT!), a research-based program for high school students that explicitly teaches a five-step model for bystander intervention. Participants will gain insight into the structure and content of the training, engage with interactive sample components, and learn about the program’s demonstrated impact on students’ knowledge, confidence, and intervention behaviors in situations involving bullying, cyberbullying, and sexual harassment.
